Henry Wu

Henry Wu, a recent high school graduate from Essex Junction, Vermont, began playing the piano at age 5 and the cello at age 9. Since then, he has used music as a tool for social change and unity across cultural backgrounds. Henry studies the cello with Emily Taubl. He was the principal cellist of the Vermont Youth Orchestra for three years and was selected as a Senior Soloist for the 2019-2020 season. He has also served as principal and assistant principal cellist for the All-State and New England Music Festival orchestras. Henry studies the piano with Paul Orgel. He soloed with the Vermont Philharmonic as the recipient of the 2019 Borowicz Scholarship. Henry was also an All-State scholarship prizewinner for both instruments throughout high school. Henry is a co-founder of Classical Music Encounters, a library performance series that aims to introduce diverse audiences to classical music. He was also the cellist for the Vermont social justice band SoundCheck, a musician in the Essex High School pit orchestra, and the pianist for the Essex Jazz Orchestra, and the music director for the local middle school musical. Henry is a U.S. Presidential Scholar, Coca-Cola Scholar, Equitable Excellence Scholar, and Vermont Presidential Scholar in the Arts. He is taking a gap year before attending Harvard University, where he hopes to study the intersection of data science, public policy, and education.
