Julin Cheung
Back to BACH Soloist (Flute)
Julin developed his passion for flute at the age of six after hearing a flute rendition of the Flight of the Bumble Bee on the radio. After two years of dedicated practice, he was selected to join the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra, where he performed through the adolescence.
Julin has won a number of local and international awards, including the First Prizes at the Performing Arts Festival Eastside (2016), the Severino Gazzelloni International Flute Competition (2018), and the King FM Young Artist Competition (2018); Young Artist Award with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra (2018); and Gold Medals at the Berliner International Music Competition (with high distinction, 2019) and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (2019), among many others. He performed as a soloist on multiple occasions with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra, playing a wide range of works while reaching out to diverse audiences of all ages.
In Seattle, Julin was privileged to be a student of Prof. Demarre McGill with additional instruction from Jeffrey Barker and Zart Dombourian-Eby. In spring of 2020, Julin was admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music where he is thrilled to continue his musical journey under the tutelage of Prof. Jeffrey Khaner in the coming fall.
Complementary to his flute studies, Julin plays violin, saxophone, and loves tinkering with percussion while listening to his favorite masterworks by Dmitri Shostakovich, Igor Stravinsky, and György Ligeti, among many others. In his free time, he enjoys learning foreign languages, biking, kayaking, and watching TwoSetViolin videos.
